Mom to Mom Sale Report

On March 21st, 2015 the Salvation Army hosted our first Mom to Mom sale.

·         With 25 tables available, we sold out of our spaces and saw hundreds interested in attending.

·         A handful of area businesses made donations to the Salvation Army so they could add promotional materials to our attendee gift bags.

·         Nearly 200 people showed up Saturday morning to shop from our 25 ‘Mom’ sellers.

·         In total, the Salvation Army raised $593.75 which we could put towards debt relief.

Also, we raffled off a family membership to the Children’s Museum for all our attendees, and the lucky winner was Daniel Parvu.

We would like to thank all the sellers who signed up and came out to help make our event such a successful draw for area families, and thank the area businesses who donated and helped make our event a bit bigger and more interesting for all in attendance.  And last but never least, we’d like to thank all the staff and volunteers who gave their time and energy to help bring this entire event off without a hitch.  Overall it seemed like everyone benefited, and that was the ultimate goal.

L.U.N.Ch. starts March 28th, 2015!

On March 28th we will begin our Saturday L.U.N.Ch. program at 10:45a.m, and for our first gathering we've called for a Yooper Luau.  We can't always wait for the snow to go to have our backyard barbeques and beach parties, so wear your best winter and summer getups, and maybe, you'll even win a prize.

Volunteer Appreciation

As we begin our new Volunteer Appreciation program, I thought it would be nice to show off a few of our wonderful volunteers that come from all walks of life and circumstance, to help us in doing our good works.  We welcome people from our community, from Northern Michigan's social work programs, from the Probation Offices, Michigan and Experience Works, local organizations and many more.  Each person brings different knowledge, fresh enthusiasm, and interest in what we do here, and without their willing hands, we would not be able to go as far and help as many as we do.

Hannah Doucette comes to us from Northern Michigan's social work program, learning how we interact with our community while we serve human needs.  When asked why she chose to volunteer with us, she said she'd "heard so many good things about The Salvation Army, and she wanted to help her community as much as she could."  Thank you, Hannah, for giving your time.

Marilyn Fortin has joined us as part of Michigan Works, building job experience and skills while she pursues permanent employment.  She says "I love it here." And we're glad to have her help.

Randy Keating is working with us for Community Service, giving back to his community while learning valuable job skills.  When asked about why he came to us, he said "You have better customer service then other places and I like the people I work with here."

In appreciation of these volunteers and all the valuable volunteers that come in everyday, we have awarded them an appreciation certificate for use in our Thrift Store and hope to see many more stop in to give so generously of their time and energy.

Preparing for Easter

Last Wednesday was Ash Wednesday, and so the Easter season begins. Many don't think of Easter as a season but rather just a day. A day for parades and candy and Easter egg hunts. We in the church know it to be much much more! I wonder how many hours of news coverage the Resurrection would get if it happened today. After all that's what Easter is really about. A person who had been executed and buried came to life three days later! So wonderful an event that we take several weeks to explore and celebrate the event.
Come join us to discover a new understanding of Easter and what God did for you.
I hope to see you Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Store Discount Changes

Beginning Monday, February 16th, The Salvation Army Thrift Store will be expanding our discount color chart.  You will begin noticing white stickers entering the rotation, as we give our newest items a minimum of 1 week at full price before they begin discounting.  This is mainly to allow for late week donations to be stickered and put out for sale immediately instead of waiting to stock them for the following week, thus allowing you, our customers, access to as many new items as possible throughout the week.

As a result of this change, however, we will not be changing our colors at the end of this week to allow us time to add the new color to the rotation.  We thank you for your patience as we effect this change.

And as always, we want to thank all of our customers for their continuing support.

In Honor of Helvi Walkonen

Recently a long time Donor and supporter of the Salvation Army passed away and left much of her estate to the Marquette Corps.  We wanted to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Helvi Walkonen.  We'd also like to express our gratitude for this generous donation as it will help our Corps greatly, and allow us to spread some of her memory to others in our community.  Her life was so rich, full of interesting stories and moments, and it is our pleasure to be able to do this for a woman who was so very involved in our local community for so many years.
